- Tai chi is perfect for you. People of all ages and with all physical conditions do tai chi every day--and derive tremendous benefit from their practice. Unlike some disciplines that demand flexibility from the start, tai chi starts with where you are now and gradually, with relaxation, improves your flexibility.
Lately I've been having some balance issues. Should I study Tai Chi?
- Yes, definitely. Improved balance is one of the greatest benefits of tai chi. More importantly, it improves your balance while you're moving and doing your daily activities. This is more useful than simply improving balance through static poses.
What other health benefits does Tai Chi offer?
- Tai chi strengthens your legs which, combined with improved balance-in-motion, helps prevent falls. Tai chi improves circulation: Shifting your weight from leg to leg acts as a "second heart," helping to pump the blood back up to the heart. Studies have shown that regular practice of tai chi improves heart conditions, such as high blood pressure, and eases the pain of arthritis. Since tai chi addresses the nervous system, studies have shown it helps people with Parkinson's Disease, anxiety, and depression.
How much space do I need to take a virtual class?
- Not that much. You'll be standing in front of your screen and should have about two yards of space to your right, left and behind you. Ideally, your teacher should be able to see you from your feet to your head, but if you have to compromise, it's better for us to see your bottom half, i.e., from your waist to your feet. Adjust the angle of your device's camera and where you stand to get the most inclusive image possible. If you prefer to turn off your camera and just follow the audio instructions, you can do that, too; however, it will be harder for us to help you.
What should I wear?
- Your shoes should be flat-soled. Without being too slippery, your shoes should have soles that slide easily on your floor, whether it be hardwood or tile (ideal) or carpet. Amazon sells all-cotton Chinese martial arts shoes at low cost. Wear clothing that's easy to move in.
What if I have to miss a class?
- All students have to miss a class every so often, so the class pace takes that into account and always includes a review of the previous week's material. Make-up sessions can also be scheduled when necessary. All this said, the best learning takes place when you make every class and practice every day.
